machine and the monument
The big press of Terni
All'inizio del 1999 nella piazza della stazione ferroviaria di
Terni è stata collocata una enorme vecchia macchina come emblema
dell'industrializzazione del territorio e come testimonianza
dell'apporto di ingegno e di lavoro della comunità locale. Si
tratta di una pressa idraulica per fucinare l'acciaio, che ha
lavorato dal 1935 al 1993 nella Forgia delle Acciaierie ternane.
L'averla preservata dalla distruzione alla fine della sua vita
di lavoro costituisce uno dei risultati più eminenti di
salvaguardia dei grandi beni archeo-industriali. La storia di
tale musealizzazione è narrata nelle pagine di questo libro.
At the
beginning of 1999 an enormous old machine was placed in the
square in front of the railway station as a symbol of the
industrialization of the territory, bearing witness to the
contribution of intellect and work by the local community. It is
a hydraulic press for steel forging that was in use from 1935 to
1993 in the Terni Steelworks Forging Shop. The preservation from
destruction at the end of its working life represents one of the
most significant results in the safeguarding of important
industrial-archaeological heritage. The story of its
musealization can be found on the pages of this book.
